Privacy Policy

This Privacy Policy explains how African Students Gazette (“ASG,” “we,” “us,” or “our”) collects, uses, discloses, and protects information when you visit our website, subscribe to our newsletter, comment on articles, submit a story pitch, a testimonial, or a media kit request, or otherwise interact with us. By using our website, you agree to the collection and use of information described in this policy. If you do not agree, please do not use our website.

1. Overview

African Students Gazette is a digital publication covering news, culture, business, and opportunity for students and young professionals across Africa. This policy applies to all information collected through africanstudentsgazette.com and any subdomains (the “Site”), including our newsletter, comment sections, story pitch and testimonial submissions, media kit requests, and our advertising program.

2. Information We Collect

Information you provide to us

  • Newsletter subscription: your email address, and optionally your name.
  • Comments: your name and email address (or your account details, if you are a registered contributor), and the content of your comment.
  • Story pitches: your name, email address, story title, and pitch description.
  • Testimonials: your name, role or affiliation (optional), and the testimonial text you submit.
  • Media kit / advertising requests: your business or brand name, work email address, and any message you include.
  • Staff accounts: if you are an ASG editor, writer, or administrator, we collect your name, email address, and role for account and access-control purposes.

Information collected automatically

  • Pages viewed, search queries entered on the Site, and referring/exit pages.
  • Approximate device and browser information (type, operating system, screen size).
  • Aggregate, non-precise location information inferred from IP address (e.g. country/region).
  • Timestamps of activity, used to power our internal analytics dashboard.

We do not knowingly collect precise geolocation, government ID numbers, financial account details, or other sensitive categories of personal data through the Site.

3. How We Use Information

We use the information we collect to:

  • Operate, maintain, and improve the Site and its features;
  • Send the newsletter and related editorial communications to subscribers;
  • Review, moderate, and (where you have consented by submitting them) publish comments, story pitches, and testimonials;
  • Respond to media kit and advertising inquiries;
  • Notify our editorial and administrative staff internally when a new submission is received, so it can be reviewed in a timely manner;
  • Detect, investigate, and prevent fraudulent, abusive, or unlawful activity;
  • Understand aggregate readership trends through analytics, to inform editorial decisions;
  • Comply with legal obligations.

Where applicable law requires a legal basis for processing, we rely on one or more of the following:

  • Consent — for example, when you subscribe to the newsletter or submit a comment, pitch, or testimonial for publication;
  • Legitimate interests — for example, operating and securing the Site, understanding readership through analytics, and responding to advertising inquiries;
  • Performance of a request — for example, sending you a confirmation email after you subscribe, or responding to a media kit request;
  • Legal obligation — where we are required to retain or disclose information by law.

5. Cookies & Analytics

We use a minimal set of cookies and similar technologies (such as local storage) to keep you signed in to the admin dashboard if you are staff, remember basic preferences, and record aggregate, non-identifying analytics about page views and search activity on the Site. We do not use third-party advertising trackers or sell data collected through cookies. You can configure your browser to refuse cookies; some features of the Site (such as staying signed in) may not function properly if you do.

6. How We Share Information

We do not sell your personal information. We share information only in the following circumstances:

  • Service providers: we use Supabase (database, authentication, and file storage) and Netlify (website hosting) to operate the Site. These providers process data on our behalf and are contractually restricted from using it for their own purposes.
  • Published content: if you submit a comment, testimonial, or story pitch that we approve for publication, the content and the name/role you provided to be displayed will be visible publicly on the Site, as you intended by submitting it.
  • Legal requirements: we may disclose information if required to do so by law, or in the good-faith belief that such action is necessary to comply with a legal obligation, protect the rights or safety of ASG, our users, or the public, or investigate fraud or security issues.
  • Business transfers: if ASG is involved in a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets, information may be transferred as part of that transaction, subject to this policy.

7. Data Retention

We retain personal information for as long as reasonably necessary for the purposes described in this policy. Newsletter subscriber records are retained until you unsubscribe. Comments, approved testimonials, and published pitches are retained as part of the editorial record unless you request removal. Rejected or unpublished submissions, and media kit inquiries, are retained for a reasonable administrative period and may be deleted periodically.

8. Your Rights & Choices

Depending on your location, you may have the right to:

  • Request access to the personal information we hold about you;
  • Request correction of inaccurate information;
  • Request deletion of your personal information, subject to legal or legitimate retention needs;
  • Withdraw consent at any time, including by unsubscribing from the newsletter using the link included in every newsletter email, or the token-based unsubscribe link we provide;
  • Object to or restrict certain processing of your information.

To exercise any of these rights, contact us using the details in Section 14. We will respond within a reasonable timeframe, and in any event within the timeframe required by applicable law.

9. Data Security

We use industry-standard technical and organizational measures to protect information, including encrypted data storage and transmission, role-based access controls limiting which staff can view or modify particular data, and row-level database security policies that enforce these access controls at the database layer, not only in application code. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.

10. Children's Privacy

The Site is intended for students, young professionals, and general readers, and is not directed at children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If we become aware that we have inadvertently collected such information, we will take steps to delete it promptly. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us.

11. International Users & Nigerian Data Protection

African Students Gazette primarily serves readers across Africa, including Nigeria, and our infrastructure and staff may be located in multiple jurisdictions. Where the Nigeria Data Protection Act, 2023 (“NDPA”) applies to our processing of your information, we process personal data lawfully, fairly, and transparently, for specified purposes, and implement appropriate technical and organizational safeguards consistent with the NDPA's requirements. If you are located outside Nigeria, your information may be transferred to, stored, and processed in Nigeria or other countries where our service providers operate; by using the Site, you consent to this transfer, in accordance with this policy and applicable law.

The Site may contain links to third-party websites, including advertiser and sponsor websites, and social media platforms. We are not responsible for the privacy practices of those third parties. We encourage you to review the privacy policy of any third-party site you visit.

13. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time to reflect changes in our practices or for legal, operational, or regulatory reasons. We will post the updated policy on this page with a revised effective date. Material changes will be highlighted where appropriate. Your continued use of the Site after changes take effect constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
