This policy sets out what can be published on ASG Watch. It applies to everything creators upload: films, videos, titles, descriptions, thumbnails, cover images and profiles. It forms part of the Watch Terms.
1. What Watch is for
ASG Watch showcases films, documentaries, talks and stories by and for African students and young creatives. We welcome bold, difficult and uncomfortable work. Art often has to be. We draw lines where content harms real people, breaks the law, or misleads the people paying to watch it.
2. Never allowed
- Sexual content involving minors, in any form, real or simulated. We remove it immediately, close the account and report it to the authorities.
- Pornography and sexually explicit content whose main purpose is sexual arousal.
- Non-consensual intimate imagery, voyeurism, or intimate content of anyone who hasn't agreed to its publication.
- Violent extremism and terrorism: content that promotes, glorifies, recruits for or funds violent groups or attacks.
- Real-world violence shown to glorify or shock, including real footage of death or serious injury presented for its own sake.
- Hate: content that attacks or dehumanises people for their ethnicity, tribe, nationality, religion, disability, sex, gender, sexual orientation or other protected characteristic, or calls for violence or discrimination against them.
- Harassment and bullying, including targeting private individuals, doxxing or sharing someone's personal information.
- Dangerous activities: instructions for making weapons or explosives, or content that encourages self-harm, suicide or eating disorders.
- Illegal goods and fraud: selling drugs, weapons or counterfeit goods; scams, phishing, fake investment schemes.
- Deceptive manipulated media: deepfakes or edited footage designed to make people believe a real person said or did something they didn't.
- Content you don't have the rights to: see section 4.
3. Allowed with care
Some content is allowed when it has clear documentary, educational, artistic or news value, and is labelled so viewers know what to expect. Say so in the title's description:
- violence or gore in fiction, or in documentary and news context;
- nudity or sexual themes that are not explicit and are not the main purpose of the work;
- strong language, drug or alcohol use;
- discussion of suicide, self-harm, abuse or trauma, told responsibly (for example, without detailing methods);
- depictions of hate or extremism in order to criticise, document or educate.
Add a content note at the start of the description (for example “Contains violence and strong language”). We may add or ask you to add one, or limit where a title is promoted.
4. Rights & permissions
- Only upload work you made or have a licence to distribute for payment. Owning a DVD or a download doesn't give you the right to rent it out.
- Clear everything inside the work too: music, archive footage, photos, artwork and fonts. A song playing in the background still needs a licence.
- Get consent from the people who appear in it, and from a parent or guardian for anyone under 18. Respect people's privacy, especially in documentaries about real events.
- Don't imitate another creator, brand or organisation, or suggest a partnership or endorsement that doesn't exist.
5. Honest listings
- Titles, descriptions, thumbnails and running times must accurately reflect the video. No clickbait thumbnails that aren't in the film, and no trailers passed off as the full work.
- Upload the complete work people are paying for, in watchable quality.
- Don't upload the same work many times to game discovery, and don't buy fake rentals or reviews.
- Thumbnails and cover images are seen by everyone browsing Watch, so they must be suitable for a general audience even if the title itself is for adults.
6. Technical standards
Upload a clean master file with no burned-in watermarks from other platforms. Make sure audio and picture are in sync, and that subtitles (if any) are accurate. Titles that won't process or play properly may be unpublished until they're fixed.
7. Reporting & enforcement
Anyone can report a title from its page. Staff review every report. Depending on how serious the problem is, we may:
- ask you to change a description, thumbnail or content note;
- take a title down (people who have rented it may be refunded, with the creator's share reversed, as set out in the Watch Terms);
- pause withdrawals while we investigate;
- suspend or close the creator account. We do this straight away for the most serious breaches (such as anything involving minors, non-consensual imagery or terrorism).
We'll usually tell you what we did and why. If you think we got it wrong, email hello@africanstudentsgazette.com and a different staff member will look at it again. Titles we took down by mistake are restored.
